MODULE 1 OFF - ROAD RIDING TEST

 AVOIDANCE EXERCISE

   You will have to demonstrate that you can ride your motorcycle at a speed of 50km/h (31.25mph) or for mopeds 30km/h (18.75mph). Then steer around an obstacle and stop with the front wheel of your motorcycle in a prescribed area, safely and under control. Do not touch any of the marker cones or kerbs. Maintain balance at all times. You must show that you can use your brakes progressively, effectively and safely. When riding a motorcycle you must normally use both front and rear brakes. The front brake is the most powerful and the most important when stopping a motorcycle. Apply the front brake just before you apply the rear brake. In good conditions applying greater pressure to the front brake gives the best stopping power. In wet or slippery conditions apply a more equal pressure to both front and rear brakes. You should only use the rear brake on its own at very low speeds (walking pace). Do not coast in neutral or with the clutch disengaged. U - TURN (MANUAL)

   You must show you can balance and control your motorcycle whilst wheeling it around in a U turn. Leaning the machine in towards you slightly makes it easier to balance. Use the front brake with your right hand to control the speed and turn the bike between the marked lines, kerbs or cones without touching them. Take proper observation before commencing and during the exercise, you must always check the blind spots. Carry out the exercise as you would if it was on the public road. Make sure the stand is fully retracted before starting the exercise.

U-TURN (RIDDEN)

  You need to be able to ride your motorcycle around in a U turn under control by coordinating the use of the throttle, clutch, gears, rear brake and steering. Take proper observation before commencing and during the exercise, you must check the blind spots. Take observation as you would if you were on the public road. You must show that you can manoeuvre the bike in a restricted space by riding between marked lines, kerbs or cones without touching them, whilst maintaining your balance. Keep your feet on the footrests.

SLOW CONTROL EXERCISE

   You must show that you can maintain full control as if you were riding in slow moving traffic. Coordinate the use of the throttle, gears, brakes and steering. Maintain your balance and keep your feet on the footrests. Try not to touch any marker cones. Take proper observation before commencing the exercise by checking the blind spots.

USE OF STANDS

   Make sure you can use the stands correctly. Using them incorrectly can lead to personal injury or damage to the machine. You must be able to demonstrate the correct technique for putting your motorcycle on the stand. EMERGENCY STOP EXERCISE

  During this exercise you must show that you can stop the motorcycle as in an emergency. You must reach a speed of 50km/h (31.25mph) or for mopeds 30km/h (18.75mph) then react quickly to a signal to stop. You must stop safely, under control and as soon as possible. Do not touch any of the marker cones or kerbs. Maintain balance at all times. You must show that you can use your brakes progressively, effectively and safely. When riding a motorcycle you must normally use both the front and rear brakes. The front brake is the most powerful and the most important when stopping a motorcycle. Apply the front brake just before you apply the rear brake. In good conditions applying greater pressure to the front brake gives the best stopping power. In wet or slippery conditions apply a more equal pressure to both front and rear brakes. Try not to stall the engine or lose control of the motorcycle by skidding. Do not coast in neutral or with the clutch disengaged. You must also demonstrate coordinated use of the clutch, gears, throttle and steering. SLALOM & FIGURE 8 EXERCISE

   You must be able to demonstrate during this exercise that you can control your motorcycle and maintain balance when steering through a line of cones and whilst riding in a figure of eight. Try not to touch any cones, kerbs or marker lines. You must demonstrate coordinated use of the clutch, gears, throttle, steering and brakes. Keep your feet on the footrests. GENERAL INFORMATION

   You should make the same safety checks as you would take if you are riding on the public road. Make sure you take effective rear observation and check your blind spots before moving off.  Make these safety checks at all times when moving off during the test. Do not touch any of the marker cones or kerbs. Ride with both feet on the footrests. Disengage the clutch before stopping. Do not coast in neutral or with the clutch disengaged. Select the correct gear for the speed and conditions. Combine the use of both brakes. Use your brakes effectively, correctly and progressively, avoid harsh braking. When riding slowly maintain a straight line and do not allow the machine to wobble.
